Interesante estrategia del Sr Mittal____Tuesday, July 1, 2008____ ArcelorMittal ponders Rio options____ By Sherilee Bridge____ Global steel making giant ArcelorMittal appears to have decided against entering the Rio Tinto bidding war for now.____ International media today reported that steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal had decided against buying a stake in Rio Tinto Tinto to secure larger supplies of iron ore.____ This was after the Financial Times yesterday said Mittal was looking at taking a stake in Rio Tinto, a move that might have thwarted resources giant BHP Billiton's plans to take over its smaller rival.____ Mittal's strategy regarding a possible purchase of a chunk of Rio was leaked by his adviser Goldman Sachs, which this week appointed him to its board.____ "Mr Mittal has considered some involvement in the takeover, such as the idea of taking a stake in Rio through buying from existing shareholders," a banker was quoted by the FT as saying.____ "On the other hand, he could wait until later, when quite possibly some of the iron ore assets [of Rio] go on sale as a result of demands by antitrust regulators," the banker said._____ BHP Billiton's hostile bid for Rio Tinto, worth about $160 billion at present share prices, is currently being scrutinised by antitrust regulators who are bound to take a close look at how the combined group would dominate the global supply of important materials such as iron ore and aluminium._____ Steel makers across the world have already opposed the tie-up, which would combine the world's second- and third-biggest producers of iron ore._______ The Scotsman reported that Mittal, the main shareholder in the world's biggest steel maker ArcelorMittal, decided several months ago not to buy a holding in Rio._______ It said Mittal had not ruled out a future purchase, but it would be extremely unlikely in the short term.____ The Financial Times said bankers believed Rio's iron ore assets were currently worth about $50 billion.

Estratategias Chinas. Como quitarle un pelo a un gato...___China proposal for Canadian miners `small scale'____ (The Canadian Press)____ Chinese companies expanded their mining presence in Canada with two separate proposed deals yesterday, but a China expert says those investments amount to relatively little when compared with the money the emerging superpower has been spending elsewhere.____ Tyler Resources Inc. of Calgary announced it found a white-knight suitor with a $214 million takeover offer from Jinchuan Group Ltd., China's largest producer of nickel, cobalt and platinum group metals and a major producer of copper____. Meanwhile, junior uranium explorer Ditem Explorations said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with a subsidiary of China's Sinosteel Corp., to develop uranium properties in the Athabasca Basin of Western Canada.____ "This small-scale purchase of Canadian mining operations does not seem to amount to anything more significant," said Wenran Jiang, acting director of the University of Alberta's China Institute. "This is very little money for them to put into Canada."

Estrategias Chinas.. Como mueven sus piezas en el tablero de ajedrez...___China's Sinosteel gains 18.7 percent of Australia's Midwest___ (Thomson Financial)___ Updated: 2008-07-04 15:36___ China's Sinosteel Corp has lifted its stake in emerging Australian iron ore producer Midwest Corp Ltd to 18.7 percent from 11.1 percent through on-market buying, Midwest said in a statement Tuesday.___ The move by the state-owned steel group is likely to block Murchison Metals Ltd's proposal to merge with Midwest.___ Murchison argues a merger would allow most efficient development of the two companies' iron ore deposits and associated infrastructure in the mid-west region of Western Australia___. Sinosteel in December made a 1.15 billion Australian dollar incomplete and non-binding bid for Midwest, pitched at 5.60 dollars a share___. The Chinese group already has an off-take agreement in place for Midwest's Weld Range hematite project___. A report in Friday's South China Morning Post said Sinosteel was seeking a stake of about 20 percent to gain more bargaining power___. "Sinosteel wants (more) off-take (agreements) and an over 15 percent stake should be enough to secure that," the report said.___ "It might also want similar agreements on Midwest's Koolanooka magnetite project as well as other mines," the paper said.___ Murchison, which holds 4.78 percent, is offering one of its shares for each 1.08 Midwest shares.

Demanda del acero y materias primas..........July 21, 2008______ Global steel demand will outpace supply for next decade - Goldman Sachs_______ Goldman Sachs Group analysts believe that global steel markets will remain in a tight supply and demand balance for some time to come because of recent fast growth in demand relative to limited growth in supply________. Mr Sal Tharani analyst at Goldman Sachs New York offices wrote to clients that "Over the last few months, global demand has exceeded supply, creating a shortage of steel. This scenario could continue for through 2017."__________ Mr Tharani said that "There have been new pockets of demand expanding in the Middle East, BRIC countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China and other emerging economies which are pressuring the 1.5 billion tonnes of global supply. This will sustain high global stele pricing, because of high raw material input costs and the higher expenses and longer lead times associated with adding new steelmaking capacity."

Pues, cómo no? Si con un TLILLON de dolares para gastal ahola el chinito no se va a quedal solo milando........Chinese Companies May Acquire Stakes to Offset BHP-Rio Merger Impact____________ By Interfax-China____________ Chinalco is not likely to make a full offer for Rio Tinto, but a handful of domestic companies could edge out BHP by offering to acquire Rio in pieces.______________ SHANGHAI (Interfax-China)___ The recent stake participation bid by the Aluminum Corporation of China (Chinalco) [NYSE:ACH] and Alcoa [NYSE:AA] for Rio Tinto [NYSE:RTP; LSE:RIO; ASX:RIO] may spur other Chinese state-run enterprises to make similar moves in order to offset the perceived negative impact from a possible BHP-Rio merger, despite Rio's rejection of BHP's [NYSE:BHP; LSE:BLT; ASX:BHP] most recent bid, analysts told Interfax today.______________ "Although Rio Tinto rebuffed BHP Billiton's 3.4-for-one share offer last week, higher than the three-for-one share offer last November, BHP Billiton is likely to further raise its bid in the near future. Moreover, given that there is a shareholder overlap between BHP and Rio shareholders, BHP Billiton will probably directly approach Rio shareholders, and it is highly likely that a BHP-Rio merger will emerge eventually," Mysteel analyst, Gao Bo, said.______________ However, Gao said that as Chinalco is not likely to make a full offer for Rio due to the high acquisition price and regulatory hurdles, a handful of domestic companies could edge out BHP by offering to acquire Rio in pieces.________________ Rio may be purchased piece-by-piece by several companies, which will ultimately benefit from a higher bid price by BHP.___________________ "Aside from Chinalco, China's largest aluminium and alumina producer, other Chinese copper and gold companies, such as Tongling Nonferrous Metals Group, Jiangxi Copper Group and National Gold Group may make moves towards stake acquisitions in Rio. Moreover, these state-run companies are likely to team up with U.S. or UK partners in an attempt to push forward their acquisitions," Gao added.______________ "Chinalco and Alcoa's move for stake participation in Rio will pressure BHP Billiton to strengthen its bid, which will in turn benefit Rio shareholders like Chinalco," Wang Feng, an analyst with Everbright Securities, said._____________ Rio Tinto's board unanimously rejected BHP Billiton's previous offer on 6 February, saying that the proposal, under which each Rio Tinto share would be exchanged for 3.4 BHP Billiton shares, undervalues the company._____________ BHP Billiton said it firmly believes that a BHP-Rio merger will create value for existing BHP Billiton shareholders, who will own approximately 56% of the enlarged group, while Rio Tinto shareholders will hold a 44% stake in the enlarged group, with a 45% premium on Rio Tinto's share price prior to the approach._______________ The offer contains a minimum acceptance condition of over 50% of publicly held shares in both Rio Tinto Ltd. and Rio Tinto plc._______________ A merger between BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto would create a mining giant of unprecedented scale, with more than a one-third share of the global seaborne iron ore market. The conglomerate would also hold stake in the world's largest copper mine and Australia's largest underground mine, as well as various other aluminium, diamond and silver assets around the world, and would leave China, the world's largest iron ore consumer, in a weak purchasing position, according to industry experts.

No! No es una novela de ciencia ficción o de misterio. Es la realidad que la tremenda demanda del FeMn ha ocasionado..._____MOSCOW___ What is it that is drawing Russians like Victor Vekselberg and Alisher Usmanov to South Africa?_________ In Russian villages, the peasants used to say that where there's honey, there will always be flies. By that, they mean flies, not bees _raiders, not producers. _______For Vekselberg, manganese is the honey; for Usmanov, vanadium; both produce alloys vital to the production of steel. ______To those who have signed joint-venture or buy-sell agreements with the two Russians, and also those who have not, but have seen them descend on their assets nonetheless, Vekselberg and Usmanov are agile predators, whose drive is in their nasal instincts, and whose wings are their protection._______ Nikopol, the largest ferro-manganese producer in the world, and the most important source of the alloy to the Russian steel industry, is going back to the Ukrainian government to sell to Ukrainian bidders.______ On the ground, at the Kalahari manganese field, locals tell stories of helicopter landings of men from Vekselberg's Renova group, who drop in to sniff their turf, and discuss management arrangements with locals, if any are interested.______ In Gabon, the Kalahari's African rival in the production of manganese, there is talk of more helicopter landings, Renova concessions for manganese, and more promises. Asked what they are doing in Gabon, Renova's leadership has told Mineweb in Moscow that they "prefer not to answer that question." _________ As metallurgists express its value, the purpose of cornering the world market in manganese, as Vekselberg has been trying to do, is to dictate its price, and hence its profit margin, to those who cannot do without it. ______The consumption of manganese is vital to steel production, directly at the pig-iron stage of manufacture, and indirectly, when the ore is upgraded to ferroalloys and metal. ______According to the US Geological Survey, "manganese has no satisfactory substitute in its major applications." _____According to the court record, and also his family's gossip, Vekselberg has made a career out of dictating price terms, and he gets very sore-headed when someone else out-manoeuvres him on price and margin___________ In the case of ferromanganese, Russia cannot supply itself, and thus its strategic steelmaking enterprises are dependent on imports. In Soviet days, these were firmly under control in Georgia and the Ukraine. ______Today, Russia's principal steelmaker Evraz - owned by Vekselberg's sometime partner, Alexander Abramov - refuses to reveal where it buys its supplies from, terming the information a commercial secret. ______Other domestic steel and pipemakers say the same thing. ______But Russian trade statistics indicate that at least 85% of ferromanganese imports are Ukrainian. _____Poland contributes the next largest volume. ______The steelmakers estimate that the tonnage of manganese they need is equal to about 0.5% of their steel output. In 2004, Russian production was 54 million tons, and so the manganese requirement was about 2.7 million tons. For Russian steel output to expand, imports of ferromanganese must also grow._____ That's what deposits in South Africa, and maybe Gabon, are for.

Si yo fuera Pepe, no vendería, o si lo hago no a menos de $500...___________From zero to $630m________ Junior women miners strike storybook manganese deal with ArcelorMittal__________ Junior miner Kalagadi Manganese strikes a deal with the world's largest steel producer ArcelorMittal after it went from door to door to get its project off the ground in 2005.______________ JOHANNESBURG________________ In 2005 a women-led junior mining company, Kalagadi Manganese, was forced to raise money privately for its manganese project in the Northern Cape's Kalagadi Manganese Basin, after it went from one financial institution to the next to raise funds with only a prospecting permit and determination to boot.___________ Today, the women, and especially Daphne Mashile-Nkosi, chairperson of Kalagadi Manganese, are smiling as they have just signed a 50/50 equity partnership with the world's largest steel producer ArcelorMittal for the development of a manganese mine and sinter plant in the Northern Cape and smelter in the Coega Industrial Development Zone. The mine and sinter plant will produce 2.4mt sinter and the smelter 320,000t ferromanganese alloy production per year._____________ The broadbased womens group's project is valued at a total of US$630m dollars "and not rands", as Mashile-Nkosi put it during an interview with Mineweb late today._____________ The chairperson said the company was left with a choice of forfeiting the project or finding a way to forge ahead when it had no money during the early stages and when the group wasn't taken seriously in the male-dominated world of mining._____________ "So I knocked on doors in my private capacity and raised R12.5m to carry out a pre-feasibility study. We had assistance from technical people who we sometimes could not pay at month end but who also believed in the project."____________ Mashile-Nkosi said this effort first paid off when a positive pre-feasibility study lured the local Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to buy a 20% stake in the project for R60m in March this year. Their plans were then valued at R300m._____________ Kalagadi Manganese has since undertaken a bankable feasibility study of the project and has now, right before its completion in December, signed the deal with ArcelorMittal that ensures 50% of its offtake is bought by the giant steel company at market-related prices. ______________ "The equity partnership is beneficial to both us and them as ArcelorMittal has put money on the table to develop the project and lend some of the best technical expertise in the world. The company is responsible for 90% of the world's use of manganese in steel and secures manganese supply through the partnership."_____________ Mashile-Nkosi said the deal would not change project plans that will see the partnership develop Kalagadi's manganese resources into a full producing manganese mine and sinter plant and smelter by 2010. _________________ The manganese smelter that beneficiates ore to alloys sold at more competitive prices is the first new smelter of this sort in South Africa in 30 years and requires heavy investment of R2bn ($310m). _________ But the company has further growth prospects as manganese prices are at all time highs today and alloy products are selling at very high prices. ____________There is much demand for steel and consequently manganese in the developing world and studies predict a deficit of manganese in the market until 2017. _____________ "We are coming from zero to R300m to $630m and our growth prospects are very exciting," said Mashile-Nkosi
